SETIA ALAM – Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz has been appointed as Selangor Barisan Nasional’s new treasurer as the coalition looks to retake the state in the upcoming general election (GE15).

BN Selangor chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar said the coalition has also appointed Umno Sg Besar division chief Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos as the Selangor BN communications chief.

Noh said the appointments were made as part of a reshuffle of the coalition in the state, following discussions with BN chairman and Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“This reshuffle will at least be seen as something that will raise the spirit of Selangor BN,” Noh said.

Noh said this during the closing ceremony of the Selangor BN convention at Setia City Convention Centre here this evening.

With the new appointments, Tengku Zafrul has taken over the BN Selangor treasurer post previously held by Jamal.

Noh also said Jamal’s appointment was made due to his popularity among the people.

“He (Jamal) is formidable and his social media presence is also very strong,” Noh noted.

Meanwhile, Zahid told reporters that Tengku Zafrul’s appointment was the first step taken by the former banker to “dive into politics”.

“I feel it is appropriate as perhaps he (Tengku Zafrul) can fill the vacant post that was given up by Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos,” Zahid said.

“This is not only a good opportunity (for BN) as he (Tengku Zafrul) is well-known, but he has intentions to be directly involved in a political party.”

Zahid also noted that Tengku Zafrul is an Umno member who has been registered with the party's branch in Travers since 1993.

The Bagan Datuk MP said Umno and BN are also constantly looking to field “heavyweight” candidates in the upcoming election.

He added that they could come from professionals and corporate figures, and this was why he had asked Umno and BN leaders to be open to accepting new faces as candidates.

“He is a son of Selangor and I think this is only right for Tengku Zafrul to receive the offer for the post.”

Met outside the convention, Tengku Zafrul told reporters that he was thankful to BN for its belief in him as the new Selangor treasurer.

“We are a team, and if we look at Selangor the BN chairman is Tan Sri Noh Omar, and I will cooperate with all leaders in the state.

“In terms of (BN’s) strategy, we have to wait for Tan Sri Noh Omar.”

Asked whether he would be contesting in Kuala Selangor in GE15, Tengku Zafrul said it was up to the coalition’s leadership to decide.

“Candidate or not, what's important is that we are together  to ensure that Selangor returns to BN.” – The Vibes, July 31, 2022
